Routes to Science Subject Matter Competency in Chemistry

Background
California teaching credential candidates are required by law to verify their subject matter knowledge and competencies and are provided three alternative paths for fulfilling this requirement. One way is to complete a program of subject matter preparation approved by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing. The second way is to pass CSET/SSAT subject matter examinations. The third pathway requires post-baccalaureate coursework and provides the teacher with a specialized, limited credential.

The subject matter preparation for chemistry involves the completion of SFSU's BA Chemistry degree requirements plus six additional "science breadth" courses. The specialized certificate requires advanced coursework in chemistry, but does not require the "breadth" courses. Students who feel that the course requirements are onerous should consider electing the examination method. The requirements for each method are listed below. The College of Education maintains a web site with information on the single subject teaching credential program.

Please note that the requirements for single subject competency have been established by the CCTC, not by the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. We simply certify that you've met their requirements. Students who feel that the course requirement is onerous might consider taking the exams. Once an exam is passed, it does not have to be retaken, even if another exam is not passed at the same time.

Supplementary Authorization

If you are a holder of a Single Subject, Standard Secondary, or Special Secondary Teaching Credential, you may have "Chemistry" added to your credential as a supplementary authorization by meeting the following requirement: 20 semester units (including at least 10 upper division semester units) of non-remedial course work in chemistry, completed at a regionally accredited community college, college, or university. A grade of "C" or higher is required in every course used to meet this requirement.

Approved Subject Matter Competency Program Form

The Subject Matter Competency Review form is used to document a student's certification or provisional certification of subject matter competency. (The review form is page 10 of the SSP packet.)

Certification by Approved Subject Matter Competency Program (Coursework)

The course requirements are those for SFSU's BA in Chemistry degree, plus the following courses:

An overall gpa of 2.75 is required in the courses used to fulfill these requirements.

In prior years, a provisional certification can be awarded after 80% of the coursework is completed. As of June 10, 2004, the College of Education requires the subject matter competency to be completed, or that passing scores be achieved on the CSET, prior to admission to the credential program. See the CoE's single subject program webpage for details.

The 2005/2006 SFSU BA Chemistry requirements are listed below. (see the SFSU bulletin  for a detailed description of the degree requirements.)

Please list your courses on the Subject Matter Competency Review form in the same order that they appear on the SFSU Approved Subject Matter Competency Program, shown below. Note that if you have completed equivalent coursework at another institution, you must indicate both the SFSU and the other institution's course numbers.

Certification by Examination

Students may elect to demonstrate competency by achieving passing scores in a series of exams. Through 21 December 2002, the four required exams were: Praxis Exam 30242, Chemistry Content Essays, Praxis Exam 30433, General Science Content Essays, SSAT Exam 06, Chemistry, and SSAT Exam 04, General Science. Effective January 2003, the three required exams are: CSET/SSAT Exam 118, Science Subtest I: General Science, CSET/SSAT Exam 119, Science Subtest II: General Science, and CSET/SSAT Exam 121, Science Subtest III: Chemistry.

The California Subject Examinations for Teachers/Single Subject Assessments for Teaching (CSET/SSAT) organization maintains the CSET web site that includes exam dates, contents, and sample questions.

The CTC also maintains a web site with information about these exams, including the current examination schedule, at www.ctc.ca.gov/profserv/examinfo/singlesubject.html

The passing standards are shown in the table below. A change in the passing standards for the SSAT/Praxis exams became effective on Sept. 1, 1999. Candidates who passed these examinations prior to Sept. 1, 1999 may apply for a credential based on their previous passing scores for a period of five years from the date when the score was earned.

Specialized Certificate

The California Commission on Teacher Credentialing approved (in Spring 2003) four new, specialized and limited credentials in science: Biological Sciences (Specialized), Chemistry (Specialized), Geosciences (Specialized), and Physics (Specialized). This teaching certification is valid for only for the designated discipline. That is, the person would not be able to teach general science, integrated science, or introductory science. Competency can be demonstrated by coursework or by examination.

The subject matter competency for the specialized certificate can be met by one of two options:

  1. Completion of a post-baccalaureate degree from a regionally-accredited institution in the requested area, or in a closely related area deemed equivalent by the Commission.
  2. Completion of a baccalaureate degree and 30 semester-units or 45 quarter-units of postgraduate coursework in the science area requested, or in a closely related area deemed equivalent by the Commission.

The degree and postgraduate coursework must be from a regionally-accredited institution, and each course applicable to the science area requested shall have a grade of "B" or better, "pass," or "credit."

The closely related areas for the chemistry(specialized) certificate are: Inorganic Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Biochemistry, Quantitative Analysis/Qualitative Analysis, Nuclear Chemistry, and Physical Science-Chemistry.

Individuals who choose to satisfy the subject matter requirement by the examination option must obtain passing scores on CSET science subtests III and IV, test #121 - science subtest iii: chemistry and test #125 - science subtest iv: chemistry (specialized), respectively. The official CSET Web site, which includes test guides, internet registration, and, as available, more information on the CSET: Science Subtest IV, can be found at www.cset.nesinc.com. For further information about this new creditial and the subject matter requirements, see CCTC website.
